Folate

Folate helps cells make DNA and supports cell division. Folic-acid evidence for neural-tube-defect prevention is specific and should not be generalized to every methylfolate or wellness claim.

A clear starting point

Folate helps cells make DNA and supports cell division. Folic-acid evidence for neural-tube-defect prevention is specific and should not be generalized to every methylfolate or wellness claim.

How it works

One-carbon transfer / nucleotide synthesis

Folate helps cells make DNA and supports cell division. Folic-acid evidence for neural-tube-defect prevention is specific and should not be generalized to every methylfolate or wellness claim.

Targets & processes
Folate-dependent nucleotide-synthesis and methyl-transfer enzyme systems.
Systems & tissues
Dividing cells, blood-cell formation and developing neural tissues.

What does the evidence show?

Strong evidence supports folic-acid intake around conception for prevention of neural tube defects; folate is also required to prevent deficiency-related megaloblastic anemia.

What this does not establish

Prevention evidence applies to specific forms and contexts. It does not establish disease treatment or superiority of marketed methylated formulations.

Safety is a separate question

Large supplemental folate exposure can correct B12-deficiency anemia without correcting neurological injury, delaying recognition of the underlying problem.

Contraindications & cautions

Unexplained anemia or suspected B12 deficiency should not be managed with folate alone.

Medication & supplement interactions

Methotrexate, antiepileptic medicines and sulfasalazine require clinician-guided review of folate use.
