Limited human evidenceGut-microbiome-derived ellagitannin metabolite

Urolithin A

Urolithin A is a metabolite some gut microbes produce from dietary precursors. Supplement trials investigate mitochondrial and muscle outcomes; it is not an established anti-aging treatment.

A clear starting point

Cells recycle damaged parts, including mitochondria. Urolithin A is studied in relation to that recycling process. A laboratory effect does not tell us that people live longer.

Systems mapping shows biological relevance, not a treatment recommendation or a patient CPI score.

No validated chemical structure is displayed in this edition.

How it works

Mitophagy / mitochondrial quality control

Cells recycle damaged parts, including mitochondria. Urolithin A is studied in relation to that recycling process. A laboratory effect does not tell us that people live longer.

What does the evidence show?

Small trials show some muscle-endurance or biomarker signals; primary outcomes in the cited trial were not significantly improved.

What this does not establish

Small samples, limited follow-up and selected populations leave uncertainty about general function, long-term safety and clinical aging outcomes.

Effect of Urolithin A Supplementation on Muscle Endurance and Mitochondrial Health in Older Adults: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

JAMA network open · 2022 · Journal Article; Randomized Controlled Trial; Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't · PMID 35050355

Verified sample: 66 · Adults aged 65–90; all White; predominantly women

Primary 6-minute walk and maximal ATP outcomes were not significantly different. Some secondary muscle-endurance and biomarker outcomes improved.

Limitations: Small, short study; secondary outcomes do not prove general anti-aging effects.

Safety is a separate question

Short studies reported tolerability in selected adults; this cannot establish long-term safety or safety in vulnerable groups.

Contraindications & cautions

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and significant illness lack adequate evidence in this profile.

Medication & supplement interactions

Medication interaction studies are limited. Absence of a reported interaction is not proof of compatibility.
