Omega-3 is a family, not a single molecule. ALA, EPA and DHA have different roles; food, supplement mixtures and prescription formulations are not interchangeable.
Also indexed as: EPA · DHA · ALA · Fish oil
These fats help form cell membranes and participate in signaling. ALA is essential in the diet; only limited amounts are converted to EPA and DHA. A product label saying fish oil is not the same as its EPA/DHA content.
Systems mapping shows biological relevance, not a treatment recommendation or a patient CPI score.

Membrane lipids / lipid mediators / triglyceride metabolism

Triglyceride lowering is supported for specific formulations. Cardiovascular-event findings vary; VITAL primary prevention findings were neutral for the primary endpoints.
Prescription purified EPA outcome evidence cannot be assigned to every over-the-counter EPA/DHA blend. ALA is not equivalent to EPA or DHA.

No significant reduction in primary major-cardiovascular-event or invasive-cancer endpoints.
Limitations: Results do not establish effects of all prescription omega-3 formulations.

Gastrointestinal symptoms and unpleasant taste can occur. Bleeding considerations and atrial-fibrillation signals in some higher-exposure clinical studies require formulation-specific review.
Relevant allergies, bleeding conditions and a history of atrial fibrillation should be discussed with a clinician.
Concurrent anticoagulants or antiplatelet medicines require review; do not assume a supplement is interaction-free.
